Texas Smart Grid Community of the Future

Overview

The third component of Discovery Across Texas is to demonstrate the efficiencies that can be realized in our homes and communities through alternative energy sources. Just north of Houston, the Discovery Center at Discovery at Spring Trails in Spring, TX will soon showcase a variety of smart grid technologies that integrate wind from the grid with solar, storage, and PEV. Through formal testing of new types of load control and demand response, this community will provide the electric industries with the data necessary to reshape and support advanced demand response programs.

This Community will feature homeowner services such as:

  • High Efficiency HVAC systems with central Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) systems;
  • Plug-Electric Vehicle (PEV) charging;
  • Rooftop solar for serving as Distributed Generation (DG) for each home;
  • Solar farm to supply common areas such as a water treatment plant, community center and swimming pool;
  • Extraordinary high building envelope efficiencies;
  • Home battery storage;
  • Home energy management services including an in-home display & software applications to help homeowners manage their electricity more efficiently;
  • 2-way metering capabilities to support DG and new-generation demand response programs and
  • Smart appliances.

Texas Smart Grid Community of the Future Goals

  • Educate consumers on smart grid and energy efficiency;
  • Quantify home construction efficiency by comparing energy use with comparable code-built homes;
  • Determine the demand response potential of four tranches of homes;
  • Document consumer response to dynamic pricing models;
  • Determine the effects of residential demand generation;
  • Determine the economic value of community-level energy storage, solar farm, and centralized electric vehicle charging;
  • Determine the system value of community load patterns that complement wind generation and
  • Determine the extent to which Community of the Future technologies can be transferred to the retrofit market.
